Celestial Return is an upcoming narrative RPG from Metaphor Games, set to launch on PC via Steam in spring 2026. The project is backed by publisher Shoreline Games and recently surpassed its Kickstarter funding goal by more than 200%.
Set in the decaying streets of Netherveil City, Celestial Return follows Detective Howard, a washed-up investigator pulled into a case involving unexplained suicides, corporate corruption, and creeping cosmic horror. Death isn’t the end here. Each failure feeds back into the story, pushing the narrative forward as you return with new knowledge and fewer resources.
“Celestial Return has always been about creating a deeply immersive narrative experience that resonates with fans of both video games and storytelling-focused board games,” said Bilge Gul Cakir, Co-Founder / Author at Metaphor Games. “We are so honoured by the outpouring of support from our community, and we never imagined our gritty noir game would achieve 200% funding. Partnering with Shoreline Games allows us to amplify our vision and ensure the game reaches the widest possible audience. We’re excited to see how this collaboration will bring our community’s dream project to life in new and exciting ways.”
The game stands out through its dice-based systems, which act as both currency and decision-making tools. Dice are spent during conversations, investigations, and confrontations, turning dialogue into a form of combat. Hoarding them can lock off opportunities, while reckless rolls can leave you stranded. Progression centers on shaping Howard’s personality traits, which directly affect how situations play out and which paths stay open.
“This team has an undeniable work ethic and penchant for storytelling and developing rich, narrative driven storylines. But not only that—their community has spoken, and the support for the game’s development has been incredible to watch,” said Keith Kawamura, CEO of Shoreline Games. “So, to be a part of their journey translating those narratives from board games to video games, is something we absolutely wanted to be a part of, and are incredibly grateful to do so.”
Visually, Celestial Return leans hard into a hand-drawn style that mixes manga precision with the grit of American comics. The heavy contrast, sharp linework, and noir framing give the game a graphic novel look that matches its bleak tone. It’s a striking presentation, especially for a narrative RPG that places so much emphasis on mood and atmosphere.
